Key Takeaways from Darius Foroux
Here are my top three takeaways from my conversation with Darius Foroux.
Don’t Worry About What You Can’t Control
When we’re investing for the first time or even decades into our investing journey, we can get caught up in worrying about things like geopolitical events or the US National Debt … but how much of that is in our hands really?
Outside of voting or making our representatives aware of our concerns, can we actually control any of those things?
No. We can’t.
So let’s try our best to ignore the noise and focus on our own personal economy. We can do that through automating our investments, investing in low-cost diversified index funds and staying the course.
Limit Bonds During the Accumulation Phase
Looking back, I believe my portfolio has had an over-emphasis on bonds for too long.
With decades between now and my “retirement,” decreasing volatility is not that important to me right now. I’ll take the volatility if it means the gains will be better over the long run.
I’ve endured some major dips and stayed consistent on my path to wealth. As Darius might say, my stoic investing muscle has been built up.
Given that, I’ll be reviewing my current bond allocation and adjusting accordingly.
This is not investing advice by the way. I would highly recommend meeting with a financial professional who knows your situation best.
Stoic Principles Reinforce Enduring Prosperity
While I still have a lot to learn about stoicism, I like what I’m hearing so far!
- Focus on what you can control
- Be grateful for what you have
- Presence and resilience matters
- Progress over perfection
These are all smart ways to live.
So for me, I’m going to dive into this arena more! If you’re already a fan of stoicism, please contact me and let me know if you have any books, podcasts or other resources to recommend.
In the interest of progress, I’m looking forward to learning more.
